This week, we arrived in Venice. Impressive to say the least but
don’t think I have ever seen so many tourists (not to mention
businesses that cater to them) all in one place at one time. Am
sitting in the local McDonald’s finally having found a wireless
internet connection. When I asked the owner if he had wireless,
he replied no but I already found that he did (thanks to Skype
Zones). “If we have it, you can use it,” he said with a shrug
through a friend who spoke English. The local Internet cafes
don’t open till 10:00 or 11:00 and they are usually 20 minutes
late, connectivity appears not to be a priority high here in
Venice and cafes charge an arm and a leg relative to anywhere
else (about $7 for 30 minutes). The only place I found
advertising wireless, would not allow me to plug into the
power outlet. Even McDonald’s opened 20 minutes late… Ah,
Italy…

In markets, oil was again the big story for stocks which got a
boost from the falling price of crude. But they were also helped
by better than expected GDP growth and a rise in new home sales.
